Chasing Halley
In 1910, in a sugarcane field in Fujian province, a Chinese teenager watched Halley's Comet cross the sky and decided to leave. He crossed the South China Sea, built a life in British Malaya, and died nine years before the comet returned. In 1986, that man's grandson, eight years old in a Malaysian carport, was woken by his father to see the same comet. He went back to bed. The next morning, he promised the sky he would be there when it came again. In 2061. He would be eighty-four.
In September 2025, a stage-four diagnosis arrived with a median of seven years. The boy who promised the comet would not be there to keep the promise.
Chasing Halley is the book that diagnosis made urgent. Three generations of one Malaysian Chinese family across a hundred and fifty-one years. The grandfather who fled. The grandson who arrived. An autistic son who rolls napkins into white cylinders and traces their arcs through the air, mapping the shape of a comet he has never heard named. A father writing toward a future he is unsure he will see, for the son who may be there to see it.
